Life Before Eorzea

Backstory - pre game events!

Parents

Mother - Cahth Snowhill

Beckfast's mother is a Moon Keeper Miqo'te named Cahth Snowhill who was born in the Twelves Woods. She was blessed with a great talent for conjury, but as a free spirit hated the idea of needing to join the conjurer's guild. So she ran away from home as a teenager and ended up joining a pirate crew operating out of the Moraby Drydocks in Vylbrand. She wound up in Kugane when her crew went to the Glass Ocean to plunder and raid. Her captain fell ill with some sort of aether sickness and this is how she met Beckfast's father...

Father - Yoake Kenkō

Beckfast's father is a Raen Au Ra named Yoake Kenkō. He hails from a village at the base of the Tail Mountains. He left his home because some internal conflict within the village made it really hard to live there. People were getting pointlessly violent and he couldn't stand it. He passed through the Azim Steppes, but couldn't mesh with the war like culture. Finally he made his way to Doma where he stayed for a time working as a physician. However when he heard of the Garleans invasion of Dalmasca he left Doma for Hingashi, settling in Kugane. He left out of fear that if the Garleans made it to Doma he would be conscripted.

Childhood

Born Beckfast Snowhill, she was raised with love and care from her parents. They had not expected to be able to have a children since they were of different races. As such they chose a non traditional name for their non traditional daughter.Beckfast was born looking like your average Miqo'te baby, but as she grew older parts of skin began to harden and by the age of 8 she was scaled like an Au Ra with the exception of her face. She felt self conscious about the scales as they made her look quite unusual. Sometimes people would stare, especially the ijin who visited Kugane for trade.Still, she was happy. She loved her parents dearly and admired them both for how they were always willing to help those in need with their healing skills. She did cause them no end of trouble, but it was never on purpose. She was simply naturally curious and adventurous and this would sometimes get her into trouble. She absolutely loved hearing stories her parents would tell her about the places they had visited. She liked playing at being one of the ninjas her father had told her about from Doma. She was also often fascinated by her mother's descriptions of the faraway shores of Eorzea. She dreamed of traveling some day...

From Teen to Adult

As a teenager Beckfast took up crafting as a blacksmith. She studied with some of the blacksmiths who lived in Kugane and made weapons and armour for the Seki Segumi. She enjoyed the craft and more importantly, liked how it allowed her to interact more with the samurai of Hingashi. Her dreams of traveling had been shelved as they felt unrealistic. It all seemed like nothing more than a fantasy. Until one day she met an adventurer hailing from Limsa Lominsa and come to Kugane as hired muscle for a merchant ship. Nowadays she can't seem to remember the adventurer's name or face, but she knows she met them and they inspired her greatly. They gave her an old bow of theirs and showed her the basics of archery. They told her amazing stories of their various adventures. After meeting them she felt immensely inspired and made it her goal to work hard and save up to one day go to Eorzea and become an adventurer herself. She learned of Adventurer guilds set up in each fo the Great City States in Eorzea. Her parents were wary of seeing her leave for a place so far away, but her mother, who had also long been one who wanted to roam and travel, decided to encourage her. She told Beckfast of the archer's guild in Gridania. It would take years of hardwork smithing weapons and armour, but eventually Beckfast had saved up enough gil and was able to leave her home and make her way to Eorzea. She bought a travel outfit from an Eorzean merchant before leaving in preparation to help her fit in. Packed her bags with her essentials. Equipped the precious bow that she barely knew how to wield. And boarded a ship due west at the age of 22.

Story is not set in stone. I might come back to change things at any time.

A Realm Reborn

Key moments in Beckfast's life during ARR and it's patches!

Arrival in Eorzea

Beckfast arrived in Eorzea via a ship that went to port in Vesper Bay. From there she rode a chocobo carriage to Gridania. She was fascinated by the chocobos as she had never seen one in person even though her mother had told her about them. On board the carriage with her were two young Elezen twins, a race she had seen only rarely, and a Hyuran man. Everything was exciting and fascinating to her, but she was also very nervous as people had been openly staring at her. She could hear people whispering about her skin and how strange it was. Thankfully, the Hyuran man in the carriage was friendly and seemed to simply interested in making conversation to pass the time.As her carriage crossed into the Twelveswoods she suddenly felt very dizzy and the next thing she knew she seemed to be floating in a vast void. A massive crystal floated nearby. She saw other people flying around and realized she was wearing different clothing. To her surprise it seemed highly suited for combat. And then she saw a dark robed man laughing manically and before she knew what was happening her body was moving in to attack and she heard a female voice saying "hear, feel, think". Then she was back in the carriage and the Hyuran man was asking if she was ok. She explained she got dizzy and he mentioned something about the density of the aether in the area. Beckfast shrugged it off as a strange incident and went back to trying to enjoy the beginning of her first adventure. While the Hyuran man was distracted at one point she saw a fluffy white creature floating about and stealing the man's drink, with the later being none the wiser. Noticing her surprise, the creature responded with a shocked expression of it's own. It asked "You can see me, kupo??". To which she nodded too stunned to speak. The creature introduced itself as a Moogle and explained that most people can't see it. She was about to ask it some questions when shouts erupted from the forest and armed men and women ran out shouting that the carriage had to hurrry past as there was an Ixali attack. Beckfast was thorougly distracted from the Moogle who promptly vanished while she looked away.Thankfully all went well and none were hurt in the Ixali attack. Although Beckfast did wonder what on earth an Ixali even was. She couldn't remember her mother ever mentioning them. She had managed to catch of glimpse of a brown two legged creature with a beak like mouth and wondered if that was an Ixali.

First Days in Gridania

After finally arriving in Gridania an Elezen man who appeared to be a guard of some sort approached Beckfast to ask what her business was in town. She promptly explained she was newly arrived to begin a career as an adventurer as she had heard Gridania had an adventurer's guild. The man, looked her over scrutinizingly and seemed displeased, but regardless, he pointed her towards a large building down the road."You'll want to go to the Carline Canopy and speak to Mother Miounne then. She'll help you register. And make sure you stay out of trouble. Outsiders aren't the most welcome here."Beckfast felt incredibly uncomfortable but thanked the man none the less and made her way to this, Carline Canopy. Once there she timidly stepped into the building and realized it seemed to be a tavern of sorts. It reminded her a bit of Kugane's own Shiokaze Hostelry. She looked around trying to figure out who Mother Miounne might be and finally spotted an Elezen woman working behind a counter. So she walked over and introduced herself. Thankfully Mother Miounne was far kinder than the Elezen guard she'd met ouside and helped her get registered as an official adventurer as well and giving her some tips on what to do to get started finding her way around the city.Beckfast followed Miounne's instructions and made her way first to the Aetheryte in the center of town. The use of an Aetheryte is something she was familiar with as there was one back home as well. She attuned to this new Aetheryte and then looked at the map Miounne had given her before making her way to the Shaded Bower

At the Shaded Bower she searched for a man named Parsemontret whom, as per Miounne's instructions, she bribed with an eel pie into giving her an explanation of the markets for free. Parsemontret did also make her feel slightly uncomfortable. After receiving the eel pie his words were cordial, however his gaze was not. She felt like he was disdainful of her very existence.Feeling a little shaken after the encounter Beckfast made followed the instructions on her map to make her way to the Archer's guild. She received no few stares while on her way there and by the time she arrived before the guild's large double doors she was feeling extremely nervous and out of place. She carefully peeked inside and saw there was a reception counter right by the entrance and no one but the receptionist seemed to be around, so she entered the building. Thankfully the reception was kind and welcoming and Beckfast was instructed to go and introduce herself to the guildmaster, Luciane. She gathered her courage and headed into the back room where multiple people were practicing with the bow under Luciane's watchful gaze. Beckfast shyly cleared her throat and when Luciane turned her attention over to the half Miqo'te she bore an expression of surprise."Can I be of assistance?" she asked in a kind voice.Beckfast nodded and pulled out her bow explaining how she had received it as a gift but never truly got the chance to learn how to use it. She really, really, really wanted to though! It had been a big motivating factor for her coming all the way to Eorzea from Hingashi in the Far East. The poor girl rambled on, her nerves getting the better of her.Thankfully, Luciane simply smiled gently before assuring Beckfast that if she was truly willing to dedicate herself to the art of archery she was more than welcome to join the guild. The guildmaster explained that archery had a long and storied history amongst the Wildwood Elezen of Gridania. Her job was to pass on those teachings to any and all who wished to learn. Beckfast felt relieved and overjoyed at knowing she would finally get to learn to use her precious owl bow. From there the Miqo'te half race dedicated her days to training with the bow and completing small tasks as an adventurer for the people of Gridania. It wasn't easy. She encountered many who treated her with disdain and looked down upon her, not least of all one of her assigned archery mentors, Silvairre. Thankfully, her other mentor, Leih Aliapoh was much kinder and the two quickly became close. And through it all, the good and the bad, Beckfast persisted. She also realized that part of why people looked at her so strangely and treated her with such suspicion was her unusual appearance. The scales that covered parts of her body were completely foreign to the forest dwellers. A people already suspicious of any outsiders would, of course, be extra suspicious of someone who looked so different. So she quickly bought new clothes to cover up her scales.

Questing Outside the City

She'd gone outside the city a few times, generally on quests from people who needed some bit or bob from the animals living out in the forest. However she never stayed outside the city long and always made her way back before nightfall. Until she finally felt ready to explore the woods that is. She'd become far more skilled with the bow through weeks of training and felt confident that she would be able to defend herself in whatever situation might arise.Mother Miounne had suggested she try speaking to Galfrid at the Bannock in the Central Shroud. She thought he may have some work for her if she went to him and presented herself as an adventurer. So that's exactly was Beckfast did. Galfrid was more than happy to have an extra person around to help out, but he did first want to make sure her gear was up to snuff. Thankfully, Beckfast was thorougly prepared and Galfrid gave her quest. He needed her help investigating the increase in Ixali activity of late. He suspected it had something to do with recent sightings of an unknown individual in the area. As such he requested she go to the Life Mend Stump once she felt sufficiently prepared to face whatever may come.

Beckfast decided to first acquaint herself with the nearby area and so sent up a small camp for herself just outside The Bannock. She then busied herself for a few days (while also looking around further afield) by taking on additional quests from the Twin Adders instructors and initiates stationed at The Bannock. After a few days of just being generally helpful and learning more about her surroundings she headed to the Lifemend Stump. There she found a sword jammed into the massive stump and a dead Ixal. She had yet to see many Ixal, but she was sure the creature that lay dead on the ground before her was one of them. She examined the creature, which, much to her confusion, she had but recently learned was categorized as a bird man. And after confirming that it was definitely dead she moved on to examine the sword. As she went to pull the sword out of the stump she heard voices behind her. She turned around to see a Lalafell and a Hyuran woman approaching while talking to each other. The woman took notice of the sword and exclaimed that it was a terrible idea to have put it there. She went on about how it would take far less than that even to anger the elementals and she seemed to be accusing Beckfast of doing the deed. However, before she could finish a Moogle showed up out of nowhere and affirmed that Beckfast was not, in fact, the one who put the sword in the stump. The Lalafell pondered this and asked if the Moogle knew the strange looking woman and the Moogle explained that they met in a carriage. By the sound of their voice Beckfast determined the Lalafell must be a man. And he was seemingly convinced of her innocence regarding the sword in the stump. He pondered aloud on who could possibly have done the deed. Before Beckfast could answer loud rumbling sounds came from deeper in the woods and suddenly a massive tree burst forward! It was running right at them with glowing red eyes. Beckfast simply stood there, stunned at the sight of the creature, the sound of the Lalafellin thaumaturge calling out to her snapped her out of it however and she joined the two strangers in fighting off the tree. More woodland beasts came out of the forest, enraged, but together the three fought them off.

While catching her breath after the fight Beckfast noticed a strange crystal on the ground. Upon bending down to pick it up she suddenly found herself feeling very dizzy. Before she could do anything about it she was no longer in the forest. Instead she found herself floating in a void before a gigantic crystal. And once again she heard a woman's voice. It seemed to both come from nowhere and everywhere all at once. The voice spoke of a coming darkness. She also spoke of some crystals of light that would, supposedly have the power to repel the darkness. Lastly, she bid Beckfast find all the these crystals of light and assured her that by her deeds the darkness would be pushed back. Then everything went dark. When she opened her eyes, she found herself laying on the forest floor. The Lafellin man and Hyuran woman were standing near her, peering at her curiosly. The man spoke: "You fainted. A surfeit of aether, no doubt."That's when the woman noticed the dead Ixal and the two strangers began discussing it. The man determined that the Ixal was a chieftain, how he could tell Beckfast had no idea. The two seemed to believe the Ixal were acting under orders from someone else.Right as Beckfast was about to ask them what else they knew the man received a linkpearl call. Listening in on his side of the conversation she deduced that his name was Papalymo and the woman's name was Yda. And the two seemed to be investigating the Lifemend Stump, same as her. She couldn't help but wonder if Galfrid had hired more adventurer's for the job, perhaps she had taken too long? Before she had the chance to ask them about it, Yda asked her if she was feeling better. Beckfast nodded and opened her mouth to speak but Papalymo turned to the Moogle and asked him to send word of their findings to someone named Brother E-Sumi-Yan. Then he announced that him and his companion would be on their way. Yda brought the sword over and recommended that Beckfast bring it to whomever had hired her to come out here and investigate and before she could say a word the two of them were leaving...Shrugging it off, Beckfast got up and started making her back to The Bannock. She felt exhausted and sore all over, but she had a job to finish and she would do so before getting some rest. She reported to Galfrid as soon as she arrived at The Bannock, told him all about the sword in the stump. He confirmed that the sword was of Ixali origin and wondered why they would risk coming so far into the Twelveswoods when it's so tightly guarded. Beckfast then told him about the two strangers she had met and the instructor laughed. He explained that they were Sharlayan scholars and friends of the City State."Their garb may appear outlandish, and their exchanges baffling, but never once have they given us cause to doubt them." He assured, smiling.Apparently they often helped the God's Quiver and the Wood Wailers. Relieved that they hadn't been hired by Galfrid because she had taken too long, Beckfast smiled back. Galfrid then paid her for her work, she thanked him and then was off to her campsite. She promised to return the next day after getting some rest to see if they had more work for her to do.
